Aizkorri-Aratz Nature Reserve: Relax and disconnect from the world in a protected natural area

An ideal natural space for ecotourists and nature lovers. Come and enjoy its impressive landscapes and find tranquillity in the midst of nature. This protected area contains the highest peaks in the Basque Country, Aitxuri (1,551 m) and Aizkorri (1,523 m), and has a whole network of trails to explore.

One of the main access routes to the reserve is the spectacular Sanctuary of Arantzazu, the starting point for several hiking trails and home also to the Arantzazu Visitors’ Centre, Gandiaga Topagunea, where you can find a wealth of information about this natural treasure.

This nature reserve is home to one of Gipuzkoa’s largest colonies of griffon vultures and you can often see these magnificent birds flying overhead.

The most adventurous are sure to enjoy these caves, which are some of the largest in Gipuzkoa and are located underneath the highest peaks of the Basque Country, in the Aizkorri mountain range.

This cave, which was gouged out of the rock by water over the centuries, contains numerous treasures thanks to its palaeontological origins.

Discover traces of woolly rhinoceros (Coleodonta antiquitatis), cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea), giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus) and cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) skeletons. You will also see a complete skeleton of a cave lion (Panthera leo spelaea).
